5 Signs You Need to Need to Look for a New Bookkeeper
Updated: May 24
For any small business trying to get their company to a higher level, a competent bookkeeper is an essential piece of the process. If the person handling this job isn’t doing it right, you can be in big trouble. Your bookkeeper should not just be someone that can do math but an actual business accountant with enough experience to give you the peace of mind that the accounting-related tasks are handled correctly.
If you are not sure about the job your bookkeeper is doing, here are some tell-tale signs you need to replace the one you currently employ:
1. They Rarely Communicate with You
It can get frustrating fast when you have something urgent, leave a message to your bookkeeper, and not hear from them until after a week or two. This is essentially a sign of unprofessionalism. You should always be able to communicate with your bookkeeper whenever you need to. If they take too long to answer or don’t respond at all, it could mean they don’t care about your business or they’re hiding something. Either way, you should find someone else!
2. They Have Backlogs All the Time
If the year is almost ending and your bookkeeper is still working on June’s books, it’s not a good sign. Even if something has happened that they haven’t anticipated, they should have still found the means to catch up with their work. Keep in mind that your business won’t be able to move forward if time is wasted waiting for your bookkeeper to finish months’ worth of books.
3. They Lack the Basic Knowledge
Does your bookkeeper understand the terminologies used in the industry? If they don’t know the basics like accounts payable or accounts receivable, are you sure they should be doing the job at all? Not everyone has time to teach a bookkeeper what they should already know before applying for the job. In the end, you won’t be able to focus on your own responsibilities if you need to hold their hand and guide them all the time. It will benefit you if you have someone seasoned and knowledgeable who can do the job with little to no supervision.
4. They Can’t Provide Accurate Reports
Many things depend on your company’s books. Not only should they be turned in on time, but they should also be insightful, and more importantly, accurate. Your bookkeeper must be able to provide you with a report when you request one, whether you need your income statement, your cash flow statement, or anything else you might require. Only when you have those reports will you be able to assess the financial status of your company and make the necessary decisions to take it to the next level.
5. They Always Pass the Blame
When you talk to your bookkeeper about the troubles you are noticing, and they tell you it’s not their fault or that it was an issue that started with the previous bookkeeper, you should start looking for a replacement. Your bookkeeper must be able to be thorough with their job and know that they are accountable for the job they signed up for!
When you notice any or all of the signs mentioned above and you are getting frustrated with your present bookkeeper, it is better to start looking for someone who could do bookkeeping services properly and professionally.
